Welcome back, practice puppies!
This week, we're talking about the art world.
Of course, the art world is not a single place. It is an ecosystem made up of many spaces— universities, museums, commercial galleries, art fairs, and auction houses, often in "creative hubs" like Los Angeles, New York, Paris, London, Berlin, Venice, and Mexico City. Creative people are drawn to these spaces because they offer desirable resources like money, community, libraries, tools, and status.
But these spaces and institutions often rely on competition. They uphold strict hierarchies and enforce subordinate power structures. They also practice gatekeeping, controlling access to the resources they collect. They have a history of excluding people: women, BIPOC, 2SLGBTQAI+, disabled, and working-class people.
Here's the thing: these spaces aren't what drives the art world. The art world is created by all the people who contribute to these spaces. Which means the art world is changing all the time, depending on who is participating.
New art worlds are being created every day. The possibilities are endless: zine libraries, maker spaces, activist organizations, apartment galleries, craft circles, material reuse centers, and tool libraries. Create your own art market by buying artwork from your friends and peers. There are folks in your orbit who are changing their art world, sharing resources and building creative community. All you need to do is connect with them and start collaborating.
